Shannon, MS

Black Oak Farm is located on the ancestral, unceded homelands of the Chickasaw Nation. We give thanks for their generations of stewardship and enduring connection to this land despite forcible removal and their participation in African chattel slavery. We solemnly acknowledge the foundational history of enslaved African labor on this land. Following the removal of Indigenous peoples, the agricultural wealth, infrastructure, and prosperous cotton economies of Shannon, MS were built entirely on the unpaid labor, exploitation, and profound suffering of enslaved Africans. We explicitly honor the Chickasaw Freedmen and their descendants, who endured the dual hardships of chattel slavery and exclusion in their unique struggle for tribal citizenship and rights. We commit to dismantling the ongoing legacies of systemic injustice in all its formations.
